MOBILE, Ala. - The 77th Annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo celebrated their awards night Monday, but the anglers weren't the only one reaping awards.
Rodeo officials estimate between 700 to 800 pounds of redfish fillets were donated to homeless shelters in the Mobile area. The Waterfront Rescue Mission off State Street in Mobile said they received about 200 pounds of fish. Mission Program Director Sam Bradley said that amount of food can serve up to 350 people. Bradley expects the fish to last all week and is a generous bonus for the shelter.
In addition to redfish, the Rodeo donated king mackerels. James West of the Mobile Jaycees said an environmental study center in Mobile will use the fish to feed birds throughout the year.
