NATIONAL TELEVISION / RADIO PERSONALITY VOLUNTEERING AT THE WATERFRONT RESCUE MISSION IN MOBILE, AL

Mobile, AL - 11/26/2009 - Allen Lyle, the co-host of national TV's popular home improvement show, Today's Homeowner, and the syndicated radio program, Homefront, is trading in his tool belt for an apron on Thanksgiving Day!

The happy-go-lucky handyman proves that he enjoys dishing out meals as much as home improvement advice, for what he calls, "very selfish motives." According to Lyle, "I'm always amazed by the inspirational stories I receive when I volunteer. It never fails that I walk away with the greater blessing, and for me, that makes my holiday season even more meaningful. So, if you think about it, I'm not really helping anyone. These wonderful people are helping me! What makes this particularly special for me is that I used to come here when I was a teenager along with the youth group of my church, and we'd sing several songs for anyone who would sit and listen. Thirty years later, they're smart enough to ask me not to sing this time, but I can serve up a mean helping of corn!"

Reta Barnes, Development Associate at the Waterfront Rescue Mission, says this is the organization's 60th year of providing Thanksgiving dinner to those who would otherwise go without, and none of it would be possible without the many volunteers who give of their time so willingly. Barnes says, "Our volunteers and donors are the heartbeat of the Waterfront Rescue Mission.  Without our volunteers and donors we wouldn't be able to provide for the homeless! We cannot thank our volunteers enough for their love and dedication! Last year the Mission delivered 1,900 meals to homebound men and women and served 300 meals.  We anticipate providing 2,400 meals this year, and we are very excited to have Allen Lyle serve lunch at the Mission on Thanksgiving!"

Ms. Barnes also reminds everyone that the Waterfront Rescue Mission is working every day of the year. She says, "Last year more than 53,000 meals were served, over 19,000 nights of shelter were provided, and thousands of articles of clothing were distributed to those in need."  The Waterfront Rescue Mission is located at 206 State Street in Mobile.

Allen Lyle is an award-winning actor, writer and director.
